INNOVATION
In the heart of Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a flour silo that once brought glory to South Africa’s import and export trade during the industrial era has embarked on a new mission.
The silo underwent extensive renovations, with the main structure designed by renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick. It has been transformed into a modern art space—The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa—combining art exhibitions, education, and community interaction.
The top of the silo has been transformed into a luxurious modern art-style hotel—The Silo Hotel. Its architectural structure preserves the historical features of the industrial era, while the interior design blends modern elements with artistic touches. The hotel’s exterior, known for its glass curtain walls and irregular shape, adds a unique modern atmosphere to the Cape Town skyline.
SUSTAINABLE
De Ceuvel:Not just art! There are even more impressive transformation cases here.
De Ceuvel, located in the northern part of Amsterdam, was once the site of an old shipyard, including a complex of industrial buildings such as grain silos and piers. Today, the abandoned industrial landscape has disappeared, replaced by facilities for clean energy and resource reuse found throughout the area. The renovation project has now become an internationally recognized case study in circular economy.
Through ecological restoration and the application of renewable energy, De Ceuvel has successfully transformed what was once an environmental burden into a source of social and ecological well-being. This area is not only a hub for business and innovation but also a practical example of future sustainable urban development.
SUM UP
In the future, it is believed that more and more industrial area transformation projects, aligned with social development, will emerge, breaking through the “dimension barrier” of urban construction transformation. This will allow the fading industrial civilization and the development concepts of the new era to collide, sparking even more brilliant and visually inspiring ideas and innovations.
